Vermont Democratic Party Chair’s Statement on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade
Montpelier, VT- Jake Perkinson, Chair of the Vermont Democratic Party, released the following statement regarding the anniversary of the decision of Roe v. Wade.
“Thirty-nine years ago, the United States Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade, affirming a legal right to choose for women throughout the United States. In the years since, Democrats have fought hard to protect choice, broader access to women’s health, and women’s rights. Protecting choice is protecting women.
I am particularly concerned with the trend in 2011: Republicans in Congress and legislators across the states sought to roll back abortion rights at an alarming rate. The Guttmacher Institute, a non-profit research foundation working on reproductive and sexual health issues, published a truly disturbing chart illustrating the record number of abortion restrictions state legislators proposed and implemented in 2011.
This is a trend that we cannot allow to continue. In 2012, Vermont Democrats will work hard to make sure that we elect Democrats throughout the ticket who will protect women’s health and women’s rights.”
