VDP Chair's Statement on Governor Shumlin's Announcement That He Will Not Seek Re-Election

MONTPELIER – Today, Vermont Democratic Party Chair Dottie Deans issued the following statement in response to Governor Peter Shumlin’s announcement that he will not seek re-election in 2016:

"Governor Peter Shumlin has been, and will continue to be, an extraordinary governor for our state. Through his many years of service, we have seen Vermont thrive and grow in innumerable ways. Vermont Democrats have been proud to stand with Governor Shumlin for many years and we are grateful for his commitment to combatting climate change, protecting equality, promoting business growth, and taking the challenge of opiate addiction head on. It is without question that our Party and our state are both better off because of Governor Shumlin's leadership. Today's announcement shows that Governor Shumlin will continue doing what he does best - working hard for Vermonters and focusing the remainder of his term on moving our state forward.

Governor Shumlin is an excellent member of our Democratic team, both here in Vermont and in our national party. We respect his decision and are excited to be able to support his work until January 2017.

I have been fortunate enough to call Governor Shumlin my friend and know that, with his help and support, the Vermont Democratic Party will go through the process of finding the best Democratic candidate to run for Governor in 2016. Whatever our primary brings, we will work diligently to make sure whoever follows him will be a good Democrat who will build on the progress we have already made.
