VDP Statement on Donald Trump Becoming the Presumptive GOP Nominee

May 4, 2016

Montpelier, VT Today, Donald Trump became the presumptive GOP presidential nominee following the suspension of both Gov. John Kasich and Senator Ted Cruz’s campaigns. Vermont Democratic Party’s spokesperson, Christina Amestoy, responded to the news:

“The gravity of what is at stake in November has never been clearer than it is today. The Republican Party has all but officially nominated a man for president who has created a campaign out of fear and hatred,” said Ms. Amestoy. “Donald Trump may have been the punchline of late night comedy in the past, but his candidacy is no longer a joke. His blatant disregard for civil liberties, his promotion of violence, and his horrifying language directed at women and minorities cannot be taken lightly and must be stopped.”

“By supporting Donald Trump, the Republican Party has put forward yet another candidate who failed to support American workers, rejects paid sick days and an increase in the minimum wage, supports ending a woman’s right to choose, and is endangering America’s relationships with vital allies around the world,” Ms. Amestoy continued. “In contrast, Democrats will stand together to support our working families, protect our environment, promote a safer world, and ensure equality for all Americans. The choice will be clear and I have faith in the voters that these values will triumph in the end.”
