Communications Director


The Vermont Democratic Party is seeking a dynamic, creative Communications Director to manage the overall messaging strategy of the Vermont Democratic party, for the upcoming election cycle and beyond – both internally and externally.  They will work with the Executive Director, State Chair, party officers and elected officials, and alongside Democratic candidates to create and carry out messaging to help win elections for Democrats in a complex, competitive political environment.

The Communications Director will report to the Executive Director and collaborate with the entire Party team. Salary is commensurate with experience in the range of $50,000-$55,000, and includes health care, vision and dental coverage. The position is a unionized position as part of a collective bargaining agreement with USW Local 4. Candidates must be fully vaccinated and willing to observe health protocols when required during local, state, and national health crises.

DUTIES INCLUDE (but not limited to)
  • Work with the Executive Director, Chair, and stakeholders to develop a communications plan, strategy, and overall message for the Party for the 2022 election cycle.

  • Work with statewide candidates and the House and Senate caucuses to develop a shared communications plan and coordinate with them to ensure that their campaign message aligns with the Party’s. 

  • Oversee media training for the Chair, Vice-Chair, and other Party leadership.  

  • Serve as chief communicator for the Vermont Democratic Party.

  • Manage the release of the daily press clips and monthly newsletter.

  • Develop working relationships with legislative leadership and take advantage of press opportunities.

  • Manage and develop an integrated digital campaign plan for the Vermont Democratic Party, including fundraising/list building emails, social media, and web properties.

  • Write, edit, and design timely, engaging content for the party’s email list. 

  • Segment lists, test approaches, and use best practices to raise money, mobilize volunteers, and help elect candidates up and down the ticket.

  • Facilitate press conferences and other earned media events.

  • Create a cohesive statewide message by writing, editing, designing, and curating content for the Party’s social media accounts and the social media accounts of our local affiliates.

  • Write and disseminate press releases, media advisories, talking points, and statements from the Chair, including rapid response materials..

  • Work closely with Party’s Communications Assistant to create social media graphics, videos, and other digital content to elevate the Party’s work.



  • Minimum 2-3 years working in political and/or advocacy communications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with email and digital organizing, communications, and online fundraising.

  • Experience with InDesign or other desktop publishing software preferred

  • Experience in graphic design, social media management, and strategic communications

  • Ability to establish and maintain a credible reputation and high profile presence in the press community on behalf of the Vermont Democratic Party.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities under strict deadlines.

  • Responsive, positive team player who enjoys versatility and tackling new challenges.

  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suites, HTML, and CSS.

  • Proven experience managing multiple complex projects and finishing tasks on time. 

  • Basic videography and photography skills preferred.

  • Experience with NGP preferred. 

  • Willing to relocate to Vermont upon hire.
