Leahy, Sanders, Welch Endorse Joe Biden for President

Competent, honest leadership necessary in face of unprecedented health and economic crisis

VERMONT Vermont’s Congressional delegation Tuesday announced their unequivocal support for former Vice President Joe Biden for President of the United States with Senator Leahy and Congressman Welch joining Senator Sanders who previously declared his endorsement in April. Saying Donald Trump failed to lead our country, Senator Leahy, Senator Sanders and Congressman Welch said we must restore honest, competent leadership to the Executive Branch.

It is clear Donald Trump has failed every leadership test, moral and practical; domestic and international, and was never fit to lead in the first place. Our country simply cannot afford any more of his incompetent, divisive and destructive leadership. He represents a grave threat to our democratic institutions and our recovery from the greatest health and economic threat of our lifetime.

Leahy, Sanders and Welch announced their support for former Vice President Joe Biden because Joe knows how to make government work for all Americans. Joe demonstrated his leadership as Vice President after the 2008 financial crisis, and unlike Donald Trump, Joe Biden has both read and demonstrated respect for the Constitution. He has deep empathy for the challenges facing so many Americans and understands our diversity is our strength.

Joe Biden is supported by an historic group of fellow candidates who are committed to his successful campaign for president and his successful presidency. Our country is at a crossroad, and a Biden presidency will lead the way out of the pandemic, towards a more just economy, continue the fight against climate change, and restore our moral leadership.

“These extraordinary times demand the extraordinary leadership Joe Biden has to offer,” Senator Leahy said. “I have had the privilege of working with Joe for more than 40 years. He has the competence to reverse the disastrous decisions of the Trump Administration. Joe respects the Constitution, he respects his fellow Americans and over the course of his life has shown the strength of character and conviction sorely needed by our country.  I also want to thank Bernie for his inspiring campaign for president and look forward to working with him and Peter to elect Joe Biden.”

“We must come together in order to defeat Donald Trump – the most dangerous president in modern American history,” Senator Sanders said. “Vermont's working families need Trump to be a one-term president and they need Joe Biden in the White House. I look forward to working with the Vice President to help him win this campaign and move this country forward toward economic, racial, social, and environmental justice.”

"What’s at stake in this election is the restoration of America’s democracy itself," said Congressman Welch. "Donald Trump has used his presidency to attack democracy, not defend it. Joe Biden has spent his entire public life promoting and defending our democracy. It’s his commitment and his faith that a strong and confident nation believes in itself and each other, and by working together we can meet the challenges of our time. His election is about America’s renewal. I look forward to working with Patrick and Bernie to elect Joe Biden as our next President and to pursue his progressive agenda that Bernie helped, so much, to establish throughout his inspiring campaign.”
