FACT CHECK: Scott Milne the “Businessman”

MONTPELIER, VT -- Two-time failed Republican candidate for statewide office, and currently the leading Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, Scott Milne released his first campaign ad with an incomplete set of facts.

CLAIM: “My background as a small businessperson can bring much needed perspective.”

FACT: Mr. Milne inherited his parent’s successful business and sold off half of it to an out of state company for an “undisclosed payment.”

FACT: Mr. Milne’s most recent business success was raking in $1.7 million in profits from the sale of a Bitcoin-like cryptocurrency.

“Scott Milne’s ‘business experience’ is inheriting a successful business from his parents and selling off half for profit to an out of state company,” said VDP spokesperson R. Christopher Di Mezzo. “The fact is Scott Milne doesn't know what it’s like to build a small business and has nothing in common with Vermont’s struggling small business owners. The ‘experience’ he tries to hang his hat on isn’t going to help small businesses rebuild after the pandemic.”

CLAIM: Mr. Milne claims his 2014 race against Governor Peter Shumlin was “historic.”

FACT: There is nothing historic about losing a political campaign, over 50 percent of the candidates who run for office lose. In fact losing is so common, Mr. Milne lost again in 2016.  While the margin of loss in 2016 wasn’t historic, few candidates lose by nearly 30 points.

Di Mezzo continued: “Scott Milne’s second loss for statewide office may have been more ‘historic’ than the first as it was recognized as an almost exclusively negative campaign against Senator Leahy with no policy agenda or clear message.

“Mr. Milne has yet to run a successful campaign because he has yet to articulate meaningful solutions to the challenges facing everyday Vermonters. Judging by his first ad, it looks like Scott Milne is well on his way to batting 0-3.
