Vermont Democratic Party Remarks On The Passing Of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
MONTPELIER, VT — This weekend we mourn with millions of Americans over the loss of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away on Friday at the age of 87.
Justice Ginsburg’s life was one of remarkable achievement, first as a litigator and advocate for women’s rights and gender equality, and later as United States Supreme Court Justice, a role in which she served for 27 years. She was the second woman in history to be appointed to the Supreme Court, and the first Jewish woman. She was a professor, wife, mother, grandmother.
Throughout her career, Justice Ginsburg fought for a more fair and equitable society. Her early work built the foundation for the current legal prohibitions against sex discrimination in America and helped set the precedent for future women’s rights advocacy. Later, she ruled in the majority on landmark Supreme Court cases including United States v. Virginia (1996), Olmstead v. LC (1999), Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), and Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt (2016). Her dissent on cases including Bush v. Gore (2000) only enhanced her prominence as a thought leader in this country.
Justice Ginsburg will be remembered as a pioneer, a warrior, and an icon to many. Her lifelong contributions have upheld the truth that all people are created equal. We thank her for the tremendous impact her work has made on the lives of Americans for generations, and we join together to sustain the mission of her work as we continue the fight for justice and equality.
The loss of Justice Ginsburg to the U.S. Supreme Court will have significant consequences for the court and for our country. We call for rules of consistency to be applied to the forthcoming process as her successor is sought. We believe in the power of the American people to vote for those who will nominate and confirm the next Supreme Court Justice.
In the meantime, we will continue to honor the legacy of progress carried out by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in our thoughts and in our actions. May she rest in peace and power.
