MONTPELIER, VT — In 1965, America took a historic step forward with the creation of Medicaid and Medicare — ensuring that older adults, low-income families, children, and people with disabilities could access essential care regardless of their circumstances. For sixty years, these programs have transformed lives and strengthened our communities.
Now, Donald Trump and the Republican party are working to dismantle these essential programs. Trump’s so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” includes over $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act, including the largest cut to Medicaid in American history. Nationwide, these cuts will rip coverage away from millions, shutter rural hospitals, and put one in four nursing homes on the chopping block — all to fund tax breaks for billionaires and massive corporations.
“For 60 years, Medicaid and Medicare have been a lifeline for tens of thousands of Vermonters who rely on these programs for lifesaving health care,” said Vermont Democratic Party Executive Director May Hanlon. “These programs are a reflection of our values — that everyone should have access to quality, affordable coverage in their times of need, no matter your age, income, or zip code. Donald Trump’s budget will force rural hospitals to the brink of collapse, cut care for children and seniors, and threaten the coverage Vermont families rely on. Democrats will fight tooth and nail to defend health care access and protect Vermonters from the cruelty of the Republican agenda.”
Polling shows that the American people overwhelmingly reject Trump’s agenda:
Six in ten Americans disapprove of Trump’s budget and believe it will raise health care costs.
Medicaid remains overwhelmingly popular — supported by 88% of Democrats, 70% of Republicans, and 67% of independents.
The Vermont Democratic Party remains committed to protecting Medicaid and Medicare. While Republicans fight to dismantle the programs millions rely on, Democrats in Vermont and across the country will keep fighting to protect these essential programs and ensure every family, no matter their circumstances, can get the health care they need.
