Six Months In, Trump and Republicans Are Selling Out Working Vermonters

Updated: Aug 9

MONTPELIER, VT — In his first six months in office, Donald Trump has broken his promises to everyone but his billionaire backers.

“Trump promised he’d lower prices in Vermont. Instead, at the 6-month mark, he has pushed a budget that will cost Vermont households $1,600 annually to fill the pockets of the richest Americans,” says Vermont Democratic Party Chair Jim Ramsey. “Thanks to Donald Trump, more than 35,000 Vermonters will lose their health care coverage and 6,000 Vermonters risk losing access to food assistance. After six months on the job, one thing is clear: if you’re not a billionaire, Trump doesn’t care about you.”

The Republican agenda is a direct attack on working Vermonters. Under Trump’s economic plan:

  • The median household in Vermont will lose nearly $300 from the Trump Tax alone.

  • Combined with Trump’s reckless tariffs, the median household in Vermont will lose nearly $1,600 annually.

  • More than 1,900 Vermonters could lose their jobs.

  • 6,000 Vermonters are at risk of losing food assistance.

  • Over 35,000 Vermonters will lose health insurance.

  • Vermonters’ electricity bills will rise by 6.6%.

  • Trump’s tariffs have already cost Vermont businesses $32.5 million.

  • The price of everything — from shoes to coffee to utilities to used cars — is rising.

“The Republican Party has made their priorities clear, and Vermont families are not on the list,” says Vermont Democratic Party Executive Director May Hanlon. “Donald Trump and his allies are enacting an agenda of tax handouts for the ultra-wealthy, higher costs and lower wages for Vermont workers, and cuts to health care access and nutrition programs that will be devastating for thousands of our neighbors. Trump’s economic policies are a disaster for working families and will rig the economy for billionaires and massive corporations at the expense of the middle class.”
